Greenfection, spread the green, save the planet

Today, the environment is on the brink of irreversible damage. Before the impact becomes critical, we have to act. A world without biodiversity has a very bleak future. Millions of people and millions of species all share the same planet, and only together can we enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

Taking a cue from this, Tata Steel has been investing in environmental sustainability and has played a vital role in boosting the biodiversity of the areas where it operates. Let us reconnect with nature and put in efforts to earn a reputation as a green pioneer and develop a new vision for biodiversity.

Tata Steel aspires to be the global steel industry benchmark in Value Creation and Corporate Citizenship. Its commitment towards environmental issues associated with steel production processes is reflected in its Vision 2012 statement . One of the goals of the company to reduce CO2 emissions to less than 1.7 tonnes per liquid tonne of steel (t/tls) by 2012.

On this World Environment Day on June 5, Tata Steel has launched the GREENFECTION campaign. Tata Steel believes that actions by a group of people or organizations won’t be enough. It needs to spread exponentially, like something infectious. GREENFECTION is the consciousness and resolve to impact the environment in a positive way. That is what the company wants to spread, from person to person, from cities to villages and vice versa, till the whole nation is infected with the will to make a change, to create a greener, happier future.

Tata Steel has tied up with WWF (World Wildlife Federation) – to reach out to the school children through the nature clubs in schools across 10 cities in India and conduct a tree planting campaign.

The company has planned for a green lighting of Victoria Memorial, Kolkata and lighting up Tata Centre – with Green Lights- prominently visible from a distance as part of a campaign. There are whole lots of programmes on Star News, MTV and National Geographic channels.

Furthermore, there is Tata Steel Greenfection Bacchon ki Badi Baat in association with Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM. .

As part of the engagement process, “Plant a Sapling” programme for all its employees is scheduled on the World Environment Day.

Happy Greenfection!

  1. I came across today the Greefection site http://ecocitizen.tatasteel.com/greenfection/greenfection-blog.asp & instantly got greenfected!

I believe enough mass is now environmentally aware to cause transformation. We are at the tipping point so to say. What I realize is 'just being aware' is not enough. What I (decisively avoiding to say we) need is to become consciously active.

Wishing the best for the 'Greenitiative' from Tata Steel!

  2. Green is the word of the century perhaps.
there are various problems that can be solved automatically if we stick to the green policy.
    for example
1.promoting greenery by plantation of more and more trees would ensure less severe summers.
2.using green energy as by using the solar and other conventional energies will reduce the heat and pollution emitted to the environment, also the carbon content in the atmosphere would depreciate.
3.greenery is much required in the cities to tackle pollution due to traffic.
solutions are many, and each one contributes to the cause, some do it in large quantities, some not so large.
a city like jamshedpur which has plenty of greenery, looks beautiful but has a few loopholes in the system.
we are always prompted to use better and cleaner fuels which are expensive but clean. now, imagine a scenario where 10 people use costlier fuels to save the emission by say 5% each, and then there comes an autorickshaw which uses 'mixed' fuel (mixing with lower grade fuels). what happens to the balance? all the efforts of 10 people are wasted by a single man's irresponsible behavior. it is really frustrating to see such vehicles plying in the green, clean city of jamshedpur.
the traffic police needs to be strict and take these vehicles off the road so that the ones following green policy do not get discouraged.

coming to alternatives of petrol and diesel as a fuel. some say electricity is a cheap and clean fuel. it is clean for sure, but for a country like India, where all the states are energy deficient already, would the electricity cars not be a burden on the existing power sector? yes, if we can upgrade our infrastructure so as to generate surplus power, we can think about electric cars. as of now, please don't deprive the villages of whatever little electricity they get. when our capital struggles for electricity during summers, we cannot think of electric cars. Unfortunately we have only one Jamshedpur in India, where power cuts don't exist.

the need of the hour is to dream big, but also by taking the right steps in the right sequence in the right direction at the right places.

the people will need to understand that it is more than a formality and media hype, it is a responsibility and each and everyone's duty to keep the city, country and the world green.

school children are brilliant mascots of a good cause. if they are taught the right things, they will develop a habit of doing so. yes, they are the most susceptible ones to get greenfected.

summarizing the whole thing: we need to plant trees in cities and villages and other places of inhabitation , the ones bearing fruits would be a better option, as that would strengthen the food security as well.
the energy produced must be more eco-friendly such as by using windmills and hydroelectricity generating dams. nuclear energy is a very good and promising option once we can ensure its proper handling.
do not let polluting vehicles ply on city roads. (i say city roads because it is easier to check within the city.)

the initiative was much needed, and what better than Tatas to set up an example. the key to success is honestly believing in the cause, the integrity will determine the fate of the cause. we can cross all barriers and achieve it, and once we promise to ourselves that we are going to keep the motive of 'greenfection' in mind, then we will be successful, the promise needs to be honest, after all - 'a promise is a promise'.

  3. It is a commendable job.In my opinion, we need to educate children and make it mandatory for them to plant trees atleast on their and their friend's birthdays. They should be made aware regarding proper utilization of water, less use of refrigerators and use AC only when required.

Elders also need education and programmes should be conducted to ensure this doesnt remain only at plan level, but is also executed.

I personally have stopped using shower for bathing and instead use tap and bucket, saving lot of water. At various stages in everyday life, I cautiously utilize instruments to ensure minimal hazard to the environment, in the thrust to bring it to zero!

I am interested in blogging for the amazing and beautiful campaign!

  6. Hey i have got this green idea... how about if all the currencies of the world that are right now made up of paper should be made from plastic . This will reduce the consumption of paper and so many trees will be saved on the other hand using plastic currencies will benefit in the following ways:-
    1. they would last longer and currencies which are wasted (because they get torn easily as they are made up of paper) will not happen any more.
    2. Nobody throw away currencies so it wont actually harm the planet even if they are made up of plastic.
    3. and lastly it can be recycled if the currency get fades away it can be returned to the head monetary authority. Example the RBI in India.......
THIS WILL SURELY SAVE SOOOOOOOOO MANY PAPERS.....SPARING SOOOOOO MANY TREES FROM GETTING CUT DOWN.....WHAT SAY

  7. Forest degradation and soil conservation are some of the major issues faced by most nations. The solution to these problems lies in the miracle grass called bamboo. Bamboo is the most renewable resource. Though bamboo is a grass it is considered the most durable hardwood and can withstand a great deal of use without damage. Bamboo stabilizes the earth with its roots, preventing erosion. It takes in greenhouse gasses and produces oxygen. Bamboo is a multipurpose grass and can be used for making variety of products. It is used in culinary, medicine, construction, textiles, musical instruments, furniture, vessels, ornaments, paper pulp, etc. The government should encourage large scale cultivation of bamboo along the banks of the rivers which can also be harvested thereby providing additional income to the locals and ease the pressure faced by our fast dwindling forests to a large extent and in the long term reduce global warming.

1.Warning has started from all directions such as floods, forest fire, global warming, earth quakes, increasing temperature, rising of sea level , diseases , this will continue and will be more intense , we have Meta scientific solution to save the world .

2.The present Science and Technology have created/ manufactured too much global warming and have imbalanced the atmosphere .

3.We can prove the meta science solutions in the presence of Doctors ,Scientist ,Geologist, Media Etc. There is no other remedy which can save all .
